Exploring Miami With Michael & Matt
- December 24, 2024
Michael and Matt, two self-described “travel-obsessed” husbands based in Portland, Oregon, made a pilgrimage to Miami during Miami Art Week in early December 2024. On their travel and adventure blog Michael & Matt, they share their travel stories and tips through an LGBTQ lens. They also host LGBTQ group trips. We caught up with them after their trip to get the scoop on their Miami Art Week adventures.

What inspired your trip to Miami? Had you been here before?
When the clouds start to cover the Oregon skies, we start looking for someplace a little bit warmer. We had been to Miami once before, just for a quick weekend trip to visit a few friends. Our trip this year was mainly inspired by that visit. We remembered how incredible it was to visit Miami in December. The weather was perfect, the waves were gorgeous, and South Beach was filled with tons of great food options. We wanted to be reinvigorated with the excitement and joy we felt during our first visit.
Where did you stay?
We stayed at a hotel in South Beach. It is so perfectly located. It’s just a short walk from the beach and right in the action of South Beach, surrounded by great bars, cafés and restaurants. We felt extremely comfortable staying there and loved meeting others at the pool party they host on Sundays.

How would you describe the theme of your trip?
The theme of the trip was like a mix of South Beach art and action with a twist of experiencing nature in the Everglades. Since we were visiting during Art Basel, the city was absolutely bustling with activity. There were tons of art shows and enormous tents filled with pieces from renowned global artists.

We were very excited to see the art, but in all honesty, one of the biggest draws of visiting was just the opportunity to spend some relaxing time on the beach. We rented a gorgeous daybed space from Boucher Brothers on South Beach and just relished the beauty of the ocean for a few hours. It was pure bliss.
Tell us more about your experience during Miami Art Week
Our favorite was Art Gaysel at the Gaythering hotel and spa. This was my first time visiting the LGBTQ hot spot, and, wow, it did not disappoint. The entire hotel had been taken over by artists who had traveled to Miami to display their works. Each of the artists residing in the hotel transformed their quarters into extensive galleries, each with its own theme and flair. It was like wandering through a house of wonders, never knowing quite what we’d find through the next door. There were tons of locals viewing the art, so it also provided a great opportunity to make a few new friends.
Did you find Miami gay-friendly?
Miami is so wonderfully gay-friendly. We immediately felt welcomed into the community. While Miami is a large city, the LGBTQ community around South Beach appeared to be tight-knit. There are a ton of LGBTQ-owned-and-operated businesses. It was a great joy to explore and see how prevalent the community is in the city.

What were some highlights from an LGBTQ travel perspective?
When checking in at an LGBTQ-specific hotel, it felt a bit like being welcomed back home. The Wynwood neighborhood felt particularly vibrant with LGBTQ culture. There’s just a sense of belonging there. Some galleries and events in Wynwood are specifically LGBTQ-focused, and the district’s inclusive atmosphere makes it a fun place for art lovers to explore.

What were some restaurant and nightlife highlights?
One of our favorite stops was at 1-800-LUCKY in Wynwood. Serving a variety of Asian-inspired street food from multiple food carts in their indoor dining space, it really does take on a night market feel. On weekend evenings, a live DJ performs and the outdoor space turns into a dance club. It was really like no other dining experience we’ve had. We also loved having a nice evening out at STK Steakhouse in South Beach and exploring the incredible flavors at CVI.CHE105.

Did you have any “only-in-Miami" experiences?
You never know what kinds of events or surprises you’re going to stumble upon while visiting Miami. Something completely unexpected but otherworldly was the art display The Great Elephant Migration in Miami Beach. We followed the crowd onto the beach and saw a massive number of life-size wooden elephants. It was mesmerizing and absolutely gorgeous.

What would be your #1 travel tip For A First-Time LGBTQ visitor to Miami?
Make sure to explore a variety of neighborhoods in Miami. As much as the beach is an incredible place to hang, there is so much culture and energy throughout the city. Definitely make sure to have a night out in Wynwood as there are also some LGBTQ bars. We also enjoyed exploring Brickell and Coral Gables.
After your visit, how would you describe Miami in three words?
Vibrant. Energetic. Community.
