Onajide Shabaka: Miami Walking Studio
This event has passed.
Discover hidden landscapes and explore the language of plants through art-making on a walking 'studio' tour led by Onajide Shabaka, a South Florida artist whose art works focus on ethnobotany, geology and archaeology as they relate to human history, society and culture. Extending beyond a traditional studio space. Shabaka's 'studio' is often a metaphorical space such as a walk or hike in the urban or rural environment. His research-based walking practice, both outdoors and in the studio, explores the environment and its biology. With this unique practice, Shabaka unearths site-specific histories that reveal hidden narratives.
Shabaka's Miami Walking Studio is comprised of four programs that take place in two gardens located on Miami Dade College campuses. In this immersive experience, participants are invited to partake in the artist's walking practice and discover hidden landscapes and overlooked seedlings, rocks or other natural detritus. Guided by the artist's expertise, participants will explore these environments and delve into the language of plants with drawing, mapping, and printmaking techniques that will culminate in the creation a collaborative piece. Of the four Miami Walking Studio programs, two are open to the public and two are exclusively open to MDC students.
For the February 24 installment of the Miami Walking Studio series, Shabaka will guide attendees through the MDC North Campus's Palmetum, a hidden garden that will serve as an art studio for the day. Leaves, twigs, and seeds found while exploring the Palmetun will serve as artistic tools. Combined with traditional tools and techniques like Polaroid photography, drawing and charcoal, participants will craft their own unique works of art, which can be taken home.
