Scholl Lecture Series: Calida Rawles
This event has passed.
Delve into the complex history of Miami's Overtown neighborhood through art and conversation at the upcoming installment of PAMM's Scholl Lecture Series on Thursday, June 27. This event marks the opening of Away with the Tides, the first solo museum exhibition in the US by renowned artist Calida Rawles.
Rawles' captivating works bridge the past and present, exploring the experiences of Black residents in Overtown. The exhibition sheds light on the neighborhood's transformation from a thriving cultural hub to a community facing gentrification and displacement.
The program unfolds in two parts. First, a screening of "Wade in the Water" sets the stage for the conversation, exploring the symbolic relationship between Black communities and water. Following the film, a thought-provoking discussion featuring Rawles herself, filmmaker Cathleen Dean, Overtown Youth Center CEO Tina Brown, and moderator Nadege Green delves deeper into the themes of the exhibition.
Explore the *Away with the Tides* exhibition in the galleries before the conversation. To kick off the evening, PAMM invites guests to enjoy a happy hour and live jazz performance on the terrace from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., a tribute to the rich musical heritage of Overtown.
