Delve into the history of South Florida's popular midcentury architectural style known as the Florida House, a one-story structure constructed of concrete block with a large screened-in porch, Florida room, louvered windows and carport, that emerged after World War II. Beyond being an imitation of designs by well-known architects of the period such as Igor Polevitzky and Paul Rudolph, the Florida House concept was carefully nurtured by builders and developers aiming to entice northerners to the Sunshine State. Join scholar Anna Andrzejewski on Saturday, January 13 as she unveils the backstory behind this prevalent architectural form. Through colorful promotional materials and archival evidence, Andrzejewski will explore the marketing magic that transformed both coasts of South Florida into sprawling suburban landscapes within a single generation.
