Visitors and locals alike can take full advantage of the amenities at the Surfside Community Center.

Anyone staying in Surfside – whether at a hotel, weekly time share or licensed condo rental – can take full advantage of the Surfside Community Center.

The center is home to a recreational pool, children’s plunge pool and slide, walk-up café and a Whirlpool spa. In addition, the facility is equipped with locker room facilities, family restrooms, and a first aid station. To the east of the center is a green space, the perfect setting for party rentals and community events.

The Surfside Community Center also provides programs and classes for adults and children. The programs promote social, cultural and physical well-being for all who attend. The Center hosts more than 90 health and wellness classes, including Aqua Zumba, Beach Yoga, Pilates and more.

If your stomach starts to rumble or you need to quench your thirst, there is a café conveniently located poolside. This walk-up café offers tasty sandwiches, fresh burgers, salads and even ice cream for those hot summer days.

Programs & Holidays at the Community Center

Programs at the community center run the gamut from swim lessons for toddlers and kids to cultural programs for the elderly.

Popular programs include the kids soccer league which meets at 96th Street park twice a week, an aqua fitness class which takes place at the pool and the gymnastics program which uses the community center's large open-space main room.

Holidays are also a big priority for the community center with Halloween, New Year's, Easter and Independence Day all represented in community programming.

For Halloween the community center organizes a block party in cooperation with the Surfside Police Force to ensure a safe and well-attended trick-or-treat tradition.

New Year's and 4th of July are celebrated with a party and fireworks over the beach. And the annual "Winterfest" is always is a hit with the town trucking in piles of snow and kids entertainment.

History of the Community Center

In 1962, Surfside built the Community Center on Collins Avenue at 93rd Street. Originally planned as a Convention Center, the building housed a beautiful pool area, complete with a multi-lane lap pool, a small kiddie pool, and a snack bar, as well as a large, multi-purpose room with a stage, and two special function rooms. Over time the building came to house a library and offices for Surfside's Tourist Bureau and Recreation Department. A popular summer camp program was initiated over 35 years ago and still operates at a full capacity today.

Hundreds of community events, meetings, weddings and other notable functions have taken place at the Center. In 1964, World Heavyweight Champion, Sonny Liston, trained at the Surfside Community Center for his historic fight against Cassius Clay, who later changed his name to Muhammad Ali.

The Community Center was demolished in March of 2008 due to concerns about safety, and to make way for a new, updated facility. The new facility includes offices, a large meeting room, snack bar/grill, children's water park and lap pool.

The Community Center is open seven days a week, is used for many activities and functions day and night, and is a favorite of residents and visitors of all ages.
